The first cruise vessel to visit Eilat, in four years, docked last week. "The Albatross", with 700 mostly German tourists and a crew of 300, anchored in Eilat last Sunday. The ship sailed from Spain, and arrived in Eilat after stops in Tripoli, Libya, Port Said, Egypt, and Aqaba, Jordan. The vessel's next call is Yemen .
Mr. Gideon Golver the port of Eilat director general said to the press that the visit of the ship was a good sign for 2005 and expressed his hope that more ships would follow. He noted that since the outbreak of the intifada in late 2000, foreign cruise ships had avoided visiting the port of Eilat.In addition to the Germans tourists, the ship is carrying tourists from the US, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Croatia, and Brazil.
A spokesman for the Ministry of Tourism office in Eilat said that his office gave the tourists certificates of thanks declaring them to be "goodwill ambassadors for Israeli tourism". The tourists will be offered, during the stay, three tour routes from Eilat, to the Dead Sea, Masada and Jerusalem.
