Government decisive on port structural changes

In a meeting held by PM Ariel Sharon with the presence of Mr. Nethanyahu Finance Minister , Mr. Gideon Sahar, chairman of the coalition parties, Mr. Ilan Cohen director general of the PM office, Mr. Eitan Rob the head of the Israeli customs authority, Mr. Ariel Sharon the PM expressed his strong support of ports reforms and his views concerning the completion of the legal process required in order to get the reform moving.

The chairman of the parliament Ways and Means committee advised the government that within a few days he will let parliament know the timetable for the Act of parliament to be finalized.

During the meeting held at the PM office the participants dealt with possible scenarios of wildcat strike by port workers as a result of the green light given by the government to the parliament.

The PM requested all government offices to take the necessary steps to enable the uninterrupted flow of export and import goods in case port workers decide to embark upon industrial actions.

The PM and the Finance Minister decided to set up two action committees. A committee which will provide the government with action plan in case the port workers decide to close the ports gates. The second to overlook the parliamentary legal process.
