Haifa Port: container traffic up 35% in 3Q

The Haifa Port company reported last week a 35% rise in container traffic in the third quarter, compared with the corresponding quarter last year, and a 10% rise in January-September period.
 
Container traffic in the third quarter amounted to TEU 284,313and for the nine months period amounted to TEU 842,192. Total cargo weight moved through the port of Haifa in the third quarter was up 11% to 5.3 million tons, compared with the corresponding quarter last year, and a 4% rise in January-September period which totaled 16 millions tons compared with the corresponding quarter last year.
 
In January-September 2,267 ships called at the port, an increase of 7% compared with the corresponding quarter last year.
 
During the first nine months, 147 passenger ships called at the port a 10% increase compared with the corresponding period last year.
 
In a statement issued by the port authority the chairman Mr. David Hermesh noted that productivity has gone up. The average number of containers handled per shift at the port, during September, was up 4% to 171.
 
Hermesh noted also that: "despite the increase in performance the global potential is large and we believe that this is the right time to exploit the window of opportunities and develop the port of Haifa further, for the benefit of the Israeli economy".
