Haifa Port lost NIS 35 million in revenue and in addition, had to pay port employees over NIS 12 million in premiums, even though they did not turn out to work
Haifa Port president Amos Uzani said last week that the port expected to lose some NIS 60 million in 2006 because of lost revenue during the second Lebanon war and compensation paid to employees.
He noted that Haifa Port lost NIS 35 million in revenue and in addition, had to pay port employees over NIS 12 million in premiums, even though they did not turn out to work.
Haifa Port Co. posted a profit of NIS 120 million in 2005, and is predicted to make a profit this year, despite the war.
Uzani added that despite outstanding efforts made by the port it's output had not yet returned to its prewar level, and still down 10%, mainly due to the fact that a number of large customers had diverted cargo to other ports. The port handles an average of TEU 1,900 per day.
