According to the new plan, a new terminal would be constructed in cooperation with the private sector by the year 2015, at an investment of about $800m
News conference held last week by Haifa Mayor Yona Yahav, Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Haifa and the North, President Oded Feller, Haifa Port company Chairman David Hermesh, President Amos Uzani, Chairman of the Shippers Council Gad Schaefer, and the Chairman of the Histadrut Labor Federation's labor union section, Haifa region, Yigal Cohen, informed last week the creation of a coalition which would carry out a campaign to select the Haifa port as the center for the future port investment.
The coalition was formed shortly after last month's Government approval of a master plan to develop Israel's Mediterranean ports. According to the new plan, a new terminal would be constructed in cooperation with the private sector by the year 2015, at an investment of about $800m.
The ministers of transportation and finance will decide later this year which of the two ports - Ashdod or Haifa - will get the new terminal.
During the press conference, the Haifa municipality said it would prepare to go as far as giving up the idea of building an international airport in the city, in exchange for establishing a new terminal in the Haifa port.
