Israel’s Port authority is about to compensate shippers for extra costs incurred due to ports worker
After four months of negotiations between the port authority and the Government, an announcement was made by Mr. Amos Ron, Director General of the Israeli Ports Authority ( PA ) that, subject to the final approval of the Government legal adviser, the PA will begin reimbursing shippers with the extra costs incurred due to last October’s strike.

The extra costs to shippers, estimated at 30 millions Israeli Shekels, were due to shipping lines decision’s, during the port worker’s strike, to declare “termination of voyage” and unloaded large number of containers at nearby ports of Limassol ( Cyprus ), Piraeus ( Greece), Port Said & Damietta (Egypt).

Mr. Ron has confirmed that the compensations to the shippers will be paid in full consultation & co-operation with the Israeli Shipper’s Council ( ESC) whose chairman Mr. Eyal Malamud took an active part in the negotiations.
The port authority’s board headed by Mr. Dan Tichon had earlier approved the compensations due to be paid for some 10,000 containers unloaded at nearby ports.

The PA & ESC are due to publish the ways applications are to be made by shippers and processed by the PA.
