Israeli ports reform – still much to be done

At a conference marking the reforms' first anniversary held last week by the institute of management the outgoing Israel Ports CEO Amos Ron said that without a reform in port users fees, the port reforms remain incomplete and with absolutely no benefit to the economy

Uriel Lynn President of the Federation of Israeli Chambers of Commerce representing the shippers said that despite the reforms, there is still a very long way to go.

Lynn noted that "The reform in Israel's ports proved itself, but to our regret only partially. Services indeed improved, ports have learned to listen to the shippers but there is still no full competition among the two main ports."

Haifa Port director general Mr. Amos Uzani said that: "There is one central and critical thing for the success of the ports in Israel, absolutely avoiding strikes." "Clients and the major shipping companies are not interested in the port's internal affairs, just looking for reliability and incresed efficiency."

Mrs. Iris Stark, Ashdod Port chair, suggested changing the formula for calculating usage fees of port properties, based on company revenues to company profits.
