Israeli shippers council will claim damages from striking port workers

The management of the ISC (Israeli Shippers Council), a body representing importers and exporters, gave its chairman a green light to begin legal actions against port workers union and the Histadrut trade unions, claiming full compensation for damages incurred by local shippers during the four weeks long labor dispute.
 
In a statement released by the ISC , chairman Mr. Eyal Malamud said that the shippers should never accept periodic labor disputes and stoppages and will fight their case in courts.
 
Mr. Malamud re-iterated that the decision taken by the ISC to claim full compensations for direct and indirect damages, will make trade unions carefully evaluate any future actions which may result in damage to Israel's foreign trade.
 
Mr. Malamud called upon the importing and exporting communities to join forces and advise the ISC whether they are willing to jointly submit claims for damages.
 
The decision taken by the ISC followed a refusal of port workers to obey the Labor Court back-to-work order. Port workers continued a wildcat go-slow strike, despite the agreement reached between their trade union representatives and Government. The excuse was management’s decision to begin a foreman course without consulting the workers committees. The Labor Court issued a second order, which the workers obeyed.
