Islamic State (ISIS) terrorists were, according to the Intelligence Directorate of Egypt, behind an attempted hijacking of an Egyptian missile boat in the Mediterranean last month, and planned to strike Israeli maritime targets, possibly an Israeli oil rig.

According to the report this incident took place near the Suez Canal. The Egyptian ship left from Damietta Port and was attacked by the IS members as it was exiting the canal.

The hijackers admitted to having had intentions to achieve two goals: To attack a ship transporting 200 Egyptian soldiers to northern Sinai, and to attack an Israeli ship in order to kidnap its crew for use as leverage in negotiations with Israel for the release of Palestinian prisoners.
