Board members of the Port of Eilat unanimously approved last week the nomination of Mr. Moshe Mitz for the post of director general of the port.

60 candidates applied for the post including the outgoing director general Mr. Gideon Gulver.
Mr. Yair Hazan, the port chairman, said to Port2port that the selection process was fully controlled by the government companies authority.

Mitz served, until recently, as deputy director general of Celcom, Israel's largest cellular company, responsible for the business sector.

Eilat Port is Israel's only non-Mediterranean harbor and serves as Israel's southern gateway to Africa, Asia and the Far East. The Port of Eilat is a modern state of the art facility. It has sophisticated cranes for cargo and containers, advanced support equipment and well organized storage areas. It contains a deep-water jetty, able to service Panmax ships, as well as a jetty that services shallow hulls.

The port experienced recently labor unrest following rumors that Zim Integrated Shipping Services Ltd was seriously considering to end its direct container service between the port of Eilat and South Africa. The service currently employs 2 container ships calling at Eilat every five weeks.
