A subsidiary of China Harbour Engineering Co. is building the 3.3 billion shekel Southport terminal (HaDarom) near the port of Ashdod, which is due to be completed in 2020.
The new port will be built about 1km north of the current Ashdod Port and will eventually be able to receive the large container ships that presently cannot dock in Israel.
At a groundbreaking ceremony which was officiated by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other State dignitaries, Netanyahu said that the project was a "further expression of the strengthening ties between Israel and China".
Ashdod’s Southport terminal is to be built on land that will be reclaimed and will feature facilities designed to handle Triple-E class vessels (18,000 TEU capacity). At full construction, the terminals will have two quays with a total length of some 1,600m and maximum waterside depth of 17.3m. The works, for the Hadarom Port project, consist of the following: Construction of a Staging Harbour, construction of breakwaters, construction of quays, dredging works, land reclamation and compaction, area development works.
