The Histadrut - Trade Union Federation filed last week a petition in court to preserve the nepotistic hiring practices at Ashdod port, a move that was slammed by the Israeli Ports Authority (IPA) as a breach of the law.

The practice of nepotism at the port of Ashdod in which 50% of the new recruits were close relatives of port workers, continued until last year, when an earlier court ruling ordered the Israel Ports Authority to stop the practice and advertise publicly when filling any new port positions.

The Histadrut also complained that, while fighting nepotism, the ports management is ignoring political appointments.

The Ports Authority has not yet filed its response. IPA's legal representative, advocate Nahum Feinberg, said in reply that the lawsuit petitioned by the trade unions reflected a set of totally archaic values.

Mr. Feinberg emphasized that "The Histadrut and the labor committees at the ports still think they call the shots at the ports, and view their workplace as their private property, where they can hire close family members as they wish".
