The order is an upgrading of an order from two years ago to build ten TEU13,000 container ships

Foreign media informed last week that South Korea's STX Offshore & Shipbuilding had gained a order for six 16,000-TEU ships from the Ofer controlled, London-based Zodiac Marine.

The order is an upgrading of an order from two years ago to build ten TEU13,000 container ships.

It is understood that STX and Zodiac agreed modification of orders issued in October 2010 for the construction of ten containerships of TEU13,000 by establishing the delivery of four of these vessels with high capacity to TEU16,000 at an estimated cost of US$1.6 billion to be built at STX's Jinhae yard to deliver third quarter 2014.

The ultra-large containerships will be 399 metres in length, 54 metres abeam and 30 metres high - the second largest after Maersk and DSME's 18,000-TEUer and like them, boast of the same fuel-efficient technology.

STX said the price would be $160m per ship, compared with the original cost of $140m for the 13,000 teu vessels. The whole deal, including order upgrade, comes in at $1.6bn.
